Triworld Devlog #0

Hi everyone. Welcome to the first Triworld devlog. I’ve decided to collate all my side projects (toy renderers and engines) into a single one that I’m calling Triworld, a voxel adventure game inspired by Terraria, Cube World, The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild and Minecraft. For the past 3 months and for the next few months I’ll be working on a simple editor that will be used to create and manage voxel “sprites” and palettes. Here’s a quick preview of the editor. ...

The Little Book of Talent - Book Review

Author Daniel Coyle Genres Self Help Rating 💖💖💖💖🖤 Date Finished 12/01/2024 🚀 The Book in 3 Sentences There are no prodigies. Only cultivated talent and practice. Practice with intention (slow down, exagerate moves, introduce challenges). Hard Skills (kicking a ball) vs Soft Skills (reading the field). 🎨 Impressions A bit too short. Some chapters could have benefited from a few more words. How I Discovered It I had it in my TODOs for a while, I don’t remember. ...

A Random Walk Down Wall Street - Book Review

Author Burton G. Malkiel Genres Finance Rating 💖💖💖💖🖤 Date Finished ~2022 🚀 The Book in 3 Sentences On a long enought time horizon, nobody can beat the S&P500. Historically, the market goes up, eventually it will go down and nobody can predict when. The best investor is a dead investor. 🎨 Impressions Its a good book explaining the history of the stock market with the major bubbles and modern portfolio theory. ...

Why We Sleep - Book Review

Author Matthew Walker Genres Self Help Rating 💖💖💖🖤🖤 Date Finished ~2023 🎨 Impressions I’ll keep the review short and concise. My first impression of the book was good. I thought that anyone striving to improve their sleep quality should have read it. But after reading the article Matthew Walker’s “Why We Sleep” Is Riddled with Scientific and Factual Errors I’m not sure anymore. It seems that in the first chapter alone there are an unproportional number of uncited papers, misleading citacions, wrong percentages and factual errors. The book is now being cited as a source in various papers despite not having the save scientific accuracy of published papers. ...

Atomic Habits - Book Review

Author James Clear Genres Self Help Rating 💖💖💖💖💖 Date Finished ~2022 🚀 The Book in 3 Sentences Habits compound over time and decay if not maintained. Focus on creating a system not a goal. The best way to change habits is to change identity. 🎨 Impressions I love this book. I actually read this book two years ago so this review is not very accurate. What is accurate is the result I achieved after reading this book (like going to the gym regularly, reading more, going outside more, working on my side projects and more…). This book literally changed my approach to improving my habits. It’s also the only one for which I have both the digital and hardcopy versions. ...

Stolen Focus: Why You Can't Pay Attention - Book Review

Author Johann Hari Genres Self Help Rating 💖💖💖💖🖤 Date Finished 17/12/2023 🚀 The Book in 3 Sentences Systemic problems require systemic solutions; individual solutions are only a temporary measure. The best engineers in the world are working to steal your attention and derail your focus. We are in what could be called surveillance capitalism, where we are digitally monitored so that advertisers can understand us and target us with as many ads as possible. 🎨 Impressions I like the book. It doesn’t offer a solution and it doesn’t pretend to offer one because there is no solution. The author even admits that he only partially fixed the problem of spending too much time looking at a screen. I like how it addresses various problems, smartphone related ones, like food quality, dangerous untested substances, and ADHD. ...

Yes, you can beat Wall Street

Greetings. I’m not an expert in finance and investing. I know enough to be able to distinguish between good and bad investing advice. You don’t have to be a pro to start investing. In fact, almost 80% of “pros” regularly underperform the market. How is that possible? Shouldn’t the experts be able to beat the market consistently? Well, they should, but picking stocks is extremely complicated. There are plenty of financial and human factors one must consider when deciding what to buy or sell. And even if the price goes up is that because you made the right call or was it pure luck? It’s hard to investigate the correlation between one’s decision and the final outcome. ...
